Transport Orientated Development

Setting new standards in Sustainable Development

MRCB International, part of Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), is proud to spearhead The Symphony Centre development in Auckland’s Aotea Arts Quarter, having secured a 125-year leasehold over Te Waihorotiu station.

This project is a milestone in sustainable development, blending commercial, residential and retail space with a transport-oriented focus that reduces urban sprawl and car dependency, promoting greener commuting.

MRCB's approach to sustainability is founded on the five pillars of sustainability: people, planet, partnership, prosperity and peace. They are also committed to alignment with relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

With a longstanding dedication to environmental stewardship, MRCB is a pioneer in the construction sector for its green building initiatives. As one of Malaysia’s leading urban property and infrastructure developers, MRCB recognises its responsibility in building the economies of the locations where they develop, and delivering added value to society by activating and promoting sustainable business practices.

MRCB has progressively translated its vision for sustainable growth into initiatives that are embedded in business strategies. Sustainability is incorporated throughout its value chain in order to make a positive impact on communities and the environment. The Symphony Centre is set to continue this focus, employing MRCB's innovative construction technology to minimise environmental impact.

As part of its commitment to a sustainable future, MRCB has integrated robust environmental policies into its operations, ensuring all projects align with global standards for sustainability. The company has adopted science-based targets to reduce emissions and is actively exploring the use of greener materials to balance environmental goals with financial viability.

MRCB is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity, which includes adhering to social responsibilities. Its code of business ethics is not just a policy but a foundational element of its operations, embodying honesty and integrity in every aspect of the company.

Ongoing dedication to the highest standards of corporate governance is central to how MRCB manages its affairs and is fundamental to its strategy for sustainable business performance. This commitment aligns with core values of being accountable, customer-centric, courageous, creative, and driven, guiding the company as it continues to lead in sustainable urban development.

The Symphony Centre represents a significant step towards greener, more connected urban environments, demonstrating MRCB's leadership in creating spaces that are not just built for today but designed for a sustainable tomorrow.

In delivering The Symphony Centre MRCB is partnering with experienced local development and project management company RCP who share the vision of embedding sustainability and environmentally responsible thinking into construction and the long-term management plan for the building.

Contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

As a world-leading property and construction firm and responsible business, MRCB recognise the need to contribute to global efforts such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals  - a set of 17 principles that are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership that strive for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future - to guide sustainable development.

In 2017 MRCB selected two specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs): Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which are well aligned with MRCB values and business goals.

In 2018, six additional UN SDGs were identified by MRCB which reflect strengthened efforts to build a sustainable business. The SDGs selected are based on the economic, environmental, and social impacts of MRCB and the initiatives conducted to contribute to specific goals as defined by the UN.

In 2020, MRCB expanded aligned goals to include SDG 10, Reduced Inequalities and SDG 15, Life on Land. In addition, they also recognised Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Governance and Goal 17 - Partners.

Sustainability governance

MRCB has developed a governance structure dedicated to sustainability, that complements the existing organisational structure and underscores the importance of embedding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the organisation’s overall management and operations. The Board of Directors (Board) of MRCB envisions and endorses the Group’s sustainability strategic direction.

The Sustainability Management Committee (SMC) was established with the approval of the Board to translate the sustainability strategies into effective implementation of initiatives throughout MRCB. The SMC’s objective is to provide advice and assistance to the Board for sound decision making on sustainability issues as well as facilitate the overall goal towards improving and enhancing MRCB's sustainability performance.

The formal working groups managed by the Sustainability team lead the execution of the sustainability agenda for addressing issues identified in previous years and improving on material sustainability issues. Partnerships on special projects are developed to scale best practices and to augment impact when needed.
