Meet David Hazewinkel - Project Manager and Advisory at RCP

What’s your role with The Symphony Centre development?

I am a Project Manager at RCP working in the project, development and advisory space.

Day to day my role is to coordinate, plan and deliver The Symphony Centre and Bledisloe House - from concept, to build, to ‘handing over the keys’.

I also support the development team with the commercial fundamentals and contract management of this, and other projects.

Tell us about your background?

I grew up in a property family - I have spent roughly eight years in the industry, and have experience across property development, investment, project management, commercial sales and leasing, procurement, and contract management. This all started with a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Auckland.

In your experience, what makes a project compelling to you?

I really lean into large scale, mixed-used projects.

The Symphony Centre is a first of a kind for Auckland (and New Zealand), and will see the delivery of our first true Transport-Oriented Development.

The proposition of The Symphony Centre is incredibly compelling, combining the very best principles of sustainability, world-class architecture and design, and expert commercial and industry insight to create a nuanced and dynamic project that will bring with it layers of commercial and public benefits.

A multidisciplinary approach to urban regeneration, The Symphony Centre has so many schools of thought working together to create a really compelling solution to Auckland’s growing urbanisation.

What excites you most about The Symphony Centre development?

I’m really excited to see this project breathe life and vibrancy into Aotea Arts Quarter to create a reimagined destination for cultural experiences, work, dining, shopping and living. The vision for Aotea Arts Quarter has always been a bustling place, humming with students, artists, tourists and city workers alike, and The Symphony Centre will help this neighbourhood realise that potential.

How will Symphony Centre weave into and elevate the fabric of Aotea Arts Quarter?

I am a lover of music, film, fashion, design and art. I know how important the Aotea Arts Quarter is to the creative and cultural fabric of Auckland, and in its wider context - New Zealand. So it is vital that as we develop the precinct with The Symphony Centre project, we see it through the eyes of the communities that are impacted and continue to support them through the various partnerships this development has fostered.

One of which is the Auckland Arts Festival. I was really lucky to go to a few festival events this year and I’m proud to work for a business that is patronising the arts and endeavouring to protect and preserve its place in the city.

Describe The Symphony Centre development in 5 words.

Unique. Distinctive. Artistic. Innovative. Disruptive.
